Breaking Bad

2008 • Drama, Crime

What happens when an ordinary man, pushed into a corner by life, decides that playing by the rules is no longer an option? That is where *Breaking Bad* begins. First released in 2008, this American crime drama follows Walter White (Bryan Cranston), an overqualified high school chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose life takes a devastating turn after he is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. With a family to support, mounting financial worries and an uncertain future ahead, Walter starts thinking about what he will leave behind when he is gone. But the solution he comes up with takes him somewhere he never imagined going. After an unexpected encounter with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), Walter discovers an opportunity to use his chemistry knowledge in a very different way. The two begin producing and selling crystal methamphetamine, hoping to make enough money to secure Walter's family's future. What starts as a desperate plan soon becomes something much bigger. Walter's scientific knowledge gives their product an unusual advantage, but making and selling drugs is only the beginning of their problems. Every new deal brings unfamiliar faces, dangerous competitors and people who are far less forgiving than either of them expects. As the story develops, Walter finds himself pulled deeper into Albuquerque's criminal underworld, where trust is difficult to earn and even a small mistake can have serious consequences. His relationship with Jesse becomes one of the most fascinating parts of the series. They are partners, but their personalities, priorities and ways of handling trouble could hardly be more different. Their partnership goes through arguments, uneasy agreements, unexpected moments of loyalty and decisions that neither can easily take back. Away from the criminal world, Walter is also struggling to keep his personal life together. His wife, Skyler White (Anna Gunn), begins noticing changes in her husband's behaviour, while his son, Walter White Jr. (RJ Mitte), remains largely unaware of just how much his father's life is changing. Meanwhile, Walter's brother-in-law, Hank Schrader (Dean Norris), works as a DEA agent, bringing the danger of Walter's secret life uncomfortably close to home. The contrast between Walter's family life and his increasingly risky business becomes harder to maintain with every passing episode. One of the things that makes **Breaking Bad** such a compelling crime drama television series is the way it lets its characters change over time. Walter is not introduced as a traditional criminal mastermind. He is an intelligent but frustrated man who feels overlooked and trapped by circumstances. As he becomes more successful in the drug trade, however, his ambitions begin to grow, and the reasons behind his choices become increasingly complicated. The series constantly raises questions about pride, greed, family, loyalty and how far someone can go before they become a person they would once have hated. Created by Vince Gilligan, *Breaking Bad* features a remarkable central performance from Bryan Cranston, with Aaron Paul bringing equal depth to the role of Jesse Pinkman. The supporting cast, including Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt, Giancarlo Esposito, Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, adds further layers to a story filled with memorable characters and tense relationships. Set against the distinctive desert landscapes of New Mexico, the show combines crime, drama, suspense and occasional dark humour without losing sight of the people at the centre of its story. Originally airing on AMC from January 20, 2008, to September 29, 2013, *Breaking Bad* ran for five seasons and 62 episodes. Over its run, it developed a devoted worldwide audience and earned widespread critical recognition, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards. More than a story about drug manufacturing and organised crime, it is a gripping account of ambition, identity and the consequences of choices made along the way. If you enjoy character-driven crime dramas with unpredictable storytelling, unforgettable performances and plenty of tension, Breaking Bad is a series worth adding to your watchlist.
