Kantara

Written, directed by, and starring Rishab Shetty, the 2022 Kannada folk action phenomenon Kantara became a monumental pan-Indian sensation, grossing over ₹400 crore ($50 million) on a micro-budget of ₹16 crore and winning the National Film Award for Best Actor. Set in the dense coastal forests of Keradi in coastal Karnataka, the story explores the sacred cultural tradition of Bhoota Kola—an ancient animist ritual where a chosen performer becomes the earthly vessel for the divine demigod Panjurli and Guliga Daiva, protecting tribal forest dwellers in exchange for land rights granted by an 18th-century king. Rishab Shetty delivers a mesmerizing, physically ferocious performance as Shiva, a rebellious Kambala buffalo-race champion who initially rejects his ancestral spiritual calling following his father's mysterious forest disappearance. When arrogant forest officer Murali (Kishore) attempts to fence off the sacred reserve, and scheming feudal landlord Devendra Suttoor (Achyuth Kumar) plots a bloody massacre to seize the deity's land, Shiva is possessed by the wrathful Guliga Daiva. The film's electrifying 20-minute climax, featuring unearthly shrieks, fire dances, and divine retribution, stands as one of the most transcendent experiences in Indian cinema history.
