Chernobyl
"What is the cost of lies?"
Written and created by Craig Mazin and directed with suffocating tension by Johan Renck, HBO and Sky UK's five-part historical miniseries Chernobyl is a harrowing, astonishingly detailed autopsy of the worst man-made nuclear disaster in human history. In the early morning hours of April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine violently explodes during an unauthorized safety test, exposing the radioactive core to the atmosphere and sending deadly fallout across Europe. Jared Harris delivers a tour-de-force, quiet performance as Valery Legasov, an honest inorganic chemist who is paired with Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) and tireless Belarusian nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson) to contain the catastrophe. The series exposes not only the horrifying physical brutality of acute radiation sickness endured by heroic firefighters and coal miners, but the even more lethal radiation of bureaucratic denial, state secrecy, and institutional cowardice under the Soviet regime. Winner of ten Primetime Emmy Awards and boasting Hildur Guðnadóttir's chilling industrial soundscapes recorded inside an actual decommissioned nuclear plant, Chernobyl is an unforgettable warning on the cost of political deception.
The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan brought his historic, genre-redefining Dark Knight Trilogy to a thunderous, operatic conclusion with 2012's epic blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. Eight years after taking the blame for District Attorney Harvey Dent's crimes and vanishing into the shadows, a physically broken and reclusive Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) lives in seclusion in Wayne Manor, while Gotham City enjoys a fragile peace under the strict Dent Act. However, the arrival of enigmatic, agile cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway as a dazzling Catwoman) and the emergence of Bane (a physically imposing, muffled-voiced Tom Hardy), a masked revolutionary terrorist excommunicated from the League of Shadows, plunges Gotham into existential crisis. Bane brutally breaks Batman's spine in sewer combat, casts Bruce into a subterranean Middle Eastern prison pit, and detonates Gotham's bridges, holding the island city hostage with a neutron bomb in a reign of populist terror. Bruce must conquer his inner trauma to make the legendary climb to freedom, returning to save Gotham alongside Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and idealistic cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Grossing over $1.08 billion, the film is a monumental, Hans Zimmer-scored triumph of sacrifice and heroic redemption.
Oldboy
Directed by South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook as the second and most legendary installment of his celebrated The Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy (2003) won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, receiving rapturous praise from jury president Quentin Tarantino and permanently cementing the global dominance of modern South Korean cinema. Loosely adapted from the Japanese manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, the narrative begins in 1988 with Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik in a volcanic, feral, and emotionally shattering tour de force of method acting), an ordinary, obnoxious businessman and father who is abruptly kidnapped off a rainy street and imprisoned inside a bizarre, windowless hotel room with only a television set for company. Kept alive on fried dumplings and unaware of his captor's identity or motives, Dae-su learns via the TV that his beloved wife has been brutally murdered and that he is the prime suspect. For fifteen agonizing years, Dae-su conditions his body into a lethal weapon through shadowboxing against the wallpaper, feeding an insatiable hunger for retribution. Without warning, he is suddenly released inside a suitcase on a grassy rooftop, handed cash and a mobile phone, and given exactly five days by his enigmatic, wealthy captor Lee Woo-jin (Yoo Ji-tae) to solve the mystery: not why he was imprisoned for fifteen years, but why he was let go. Aided by a sympathetic young sushi chef named Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung), Dae-su embarks on a blood-drenched odyssey through Seoul's underworld, famously culminating in the legendary three-minute single-take side-scrolling corridor brawl where Dae-su battles dozens of armed thugs with only a claw hammer. Featuring Cho Young-wuk's lush, melancholic waltz soundtrack and Chung Chung-hoon's green-tinted cinematography, Oldboy is an operatic Greek tragedy of revenge, guilt, and devastating cosmic irony.
Aliens
Written and directed by James Cameron, the 1986 action sci-fi juggernaut Aliens accomplished the rare cinematic feat of expanding Ridley Scott's slow-burn horror classic into an explosive, relentless military combat spectacle that earned seven Academy Award nominations—including a historic Best Actress nomination for Sigourney Weaver. Rescued after 57 years of cryo-sleep floating in hyperspace, a traumatized Ellen Ripley (Weaver) learns that LV-426 has been terraformed into a civilian mining colony named Hadley's Hope. When contact with the colony is suddenly lost, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation recruits Ripley as an advisor to accompany a squad of cocky, heavily armed Colonial Marines led by Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), Private Hudson (Bill Paxton), and android Bishop (Lance Henriksen). Arriving on the atmospheric moon, the soldiers find the colony decimated and encounter a hive of hundreds of Xenomorphs. Adopting a traumatized orphan girl named Newt, Ripley transforms into an unstoppable, maternal warrior, strapping a pulse rifle to a flamethrower and climbing into a yellow Caterpillar hydraulic Power Loader to battle the towering Alien Queen with the immortal battle cry: 'Get away from her, you bitch!' Aliens stands as an unyielding masterclass in action cinema.
Manjummel Boys
Written and directed by Chidambaram and produced by Parava Films, 2024's Malayalam survival thriller Manjummel Boys created historic box office history, grossing over ₹242 crore worldwide to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and a cross-cultural cinematic sensation across India. Based on a miracle real-life incident that occurred in 2006, the film follows a tight-knit group of eleven working-class young men from the small town of Manjummel near Kochi, Kerala, who embark on a spirited road trip to the scenic misty hill station of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu. Led by the mature, responsible Siju David, affectionately known as 'Kuttan' (Soubin Shahir in a deeply moving, career-defining performance of ordinary heroism and devotion), the friends venture into the restricted, dangerous Guna Caves—infamously known as the 'Devil's Kitchen', where more than a dozen individuals had previously fallen to their deaths with zero successful rescues. Disaster strikes when the free-spirited Subhash (Sreenath Bhasi) slips into a hidden, pitch-black, subterranean crevice plunging over 120 feet into the earth. Faced with callous local police, hostile jurisdiction barriers, and torrential rain threatening to drown Subhash in the cavern, the Manjummel boys refuse to abandon their friend. In an act of unparalleled, heart-stopping courage, Kuttan volunteers to be tied to a frayed rope and lowered headfirst into the pitch-black abyss. Featuring Shyju Khalid's breathtaking naturalistic cinematography and Sushin Shyam's evocative score—culminating in the goosebump-inducing use of Ilaiyaraaja's 'Kanmani Anbodu'—Manjummel Boys is an unforgettable masterpiece on friendship and sacrifice.
Vikram
Lokesh Kanagaraj's 2022 multi-starrer neo-noir action thriller Vikram stands as a monumental landmark in Tamil cinema, establishing the renowned Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) and grossing over ₹430 crore worldwide. Anchored by the majestic return of universal star Kamal Haasan, the narrative begins with a masked squad executing high-ranking police officials and Karnan (Kamal Haasan), the supposedly alcoholic foster father of an honest narcotics officer. Black-ops commander Amar (Fahadh Faasil) is hired by the state police to conduct a covert investigation into the killings, peeling back Karnan's double life. Meanwhile, drug kingpin Sandhanam (a ferocious, cocaine-snorting Vijay Sethupathi) leads a brutal street gang hunting for two missing shipping containers filled with high-grade raw cocaine belonging to the mysterious syndicate head Rolex. When Karnan is revealed to be none other than Agent Vikram—the legendary former commander of the 1986 black-squad—he wages an all-out guerilla war to eliminate drug cartels and save his infant grandson. Concluding with a spine-tingling, internet-breaking five-minute cameo by Suriya as Rolex, Vikram delivered peerless cinematic adrenaline and critical acclaim.
Super Deluxe
Directed, written, and produced by cult auteur Thiagarajan Kumararaja in collaboration with brilliant co-writers Mysskin, Nalan Kumarasamy, and Neelan K. Sekar, Super Deluxe (2019) is universally revered as one of the most audacious, visually idiosyncratic, and philosophically complex multi-narrative postmodern masterpieces ever produced in Indian cinema. Interweaving four seemingly disparate stories across Chennai over a single chaotic, fateful day, the narrative explores profound themes of morality, gender identity, institutional hypocrisy, religious dogma, and the cosmic insignificance of human suffering. In the first strand, unfaithful wife Vembu (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) and her guilt-ridden husband Mugil (Fahadh Faasil) must frantically dispose of the corpse of Vembu's former lover, who died suddenly of a heart attack during an illicit liaison, drawing the attention of a brutally corrupt, voyeuristic police inspector Berlin (Mysskin). In the second strand, transgender woman Shilpa (Vijay Sethupathi in a transcendent, National Film Award-winning performance of breathtaking grace, maternal love, and heartbreaking vulnerability) returns to her family to reunite with her joyful young son Rasukutty, only to be subjected to humiliating abuse by transphobic authorities. In the third strand, four horny schoolboys skip class to watch an adult film, only to experience psychological trauma when they discover the actress is one of the boy's own mother (Ramya Krishnan as Leela). In the fourth strand, a fanatical religious man (Aruldoss) experiences a crisis of faith after a miraculous event. Featuring Yuvan Shankar Raja's mesmerizing synth-infused musical landscape and P.S. Vinod and Nirav Shah's vibrant, neon-drenched cinematography, Super Deluxe is a dizzying, intellectually exhilarating cinematic triumph that redefines the boundaries of Indian storytelling.

Arun Kumar and produced by Siddharth under Etaki Entertainment, 2023's Tamil drama thriller Chithha (Little Paternal Uncle) swept seven Filmfare Awards South, including Best Film – Tamil, Best Director, and Best Actor, celebrated by critics and human rights organizations as one of the most mature, sensitive, and emotionally devastating cinematic masterworks on child safety and restorative justice ever produced in India. Set in the quiet municipal town of Palani in Tamil Nadu, the story explores the deeply affectionate, pure bond between Eeswaran (superstar Siddharth in an astonishing, career-best performance of raw emotional vulnerability and helpless grief), a humble government office clerk, and his eight-year-old orphaned niece Sundari, whom he affectionately calls 'Settai'. Eeswaran has raised Sundari as his own child following his brother's untimely death, sharing everyday joys alongside his supportive romantic partner Shakthi (Nimisha Sajayan in a grounded, powerful performance). Kantara
Written, directed by, and starring Rishab Shetty, the 2022 Kannada folk action phenomenon Kantara became a monumental pan-Indian sensation, grossing over ₹400 crore ($50 million) on a micro-budget of ₹16 crore and winning the National Film Award for Best Actor. Set in the dense coastal forests of Keradi in coastal Karnataka, the story explores the sacred cultural tradition of Bhoota Kola—an ancient animist ritual where a chosen performer becomes the earthly vessel for the divine demigod Panjurli and Guliga Daiva, protecting tribal forest dwellers in exchange for land rights granted by an 18th-century king. Rishab Shetty delivers a mesmerizing, physically ferocious performance as Shiva, a rebellious Kambala buffalo-race champion who initially rejects his ancestral spiritual calling following his father's mysterious forest disappearance. When arrogant forest officer Murali (Kishore) attempts to fence off the sacred reserve, and scheming feudal landlord Devendra Suttoor (Achyuth Kumar) plots a bloody massacre to seize the deity's land, Shiva is possessed by the wrathful Guliga Daiva. The film's electrifying 20-minute climax, featuring unearthly shrieks, fire dances, and divine retribution, stands as one of the most transcendent experiences in Indian cinema history.

Khurrana stars as Akash, a talented Pune pianist who feigns complete blindness under the pretension that visual deprivation enhances his musical creativity. While performing at a private anniversary concert at the luxury apartment of washed-up 1970s Bollywood actor Pramod Sinha (Anil Dhawan), Akash inadvertently walks into a horrific crime scene: Pramod lies dead on the floor, murdered by his seductive younger wife Simi (Tabu in a delightfully wicked, career-best turn) and her corrupt police inspector lover Manohar (Manav Vij). Trapped in a terrifying dilemma, Akash must perform Beethoven on the piano while literally stepping over a corpse without revealing that he can see.
