Kiran Rao

Kiran Rao, born on November 7, 1973, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer celebrated for her perceptive social storytelling, warmth, and dedication to humanistic cinema. Coming from a distinguished royal lineage, she grew up in Kolkata attending Loreto House. She later moved to Mumbai, earning her degree in Food Science from Sophia College for Women, before studying visual storytelling at Jamia Millia Islamia's renowned A.J.K. Mass Communication Research Centre in New Delhi. Kiran began her film journey behind the scenes, working with diligence as an assistant director on landmark productions. She honed her craft on Ashutosh Gowariker's Oscar-nominated epic Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, and Swades. These formative experiences gave her an intimate understanding of large film productions and grounded rural realities, preparing her for an extraordinary independent directorial voice. In 2011, Kiran made her feature directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won universal praise for its poetic look at Mumbai's urban soul. As a producer with Aamir Khan Productions, she helped bring game-changing films to life, including Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, and Secret Superstar. In 2024, she directed the satirical comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies, which charmed global audiences with its witty critique of patriarchal traditions. Selected as India's official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, the film cemented Kiran Rao as one of world cinema's most thoughtful voices.
