Vidya Balan
Celebrated for Actress & Distinctive Filmmaking
Biography
Vidya Balan is a National Film Award, Padma Shri, and seven-time Filmfare Award-winning Indian actress widely celebrated for revolutionizing the portrayal of women in contemporary Hindi cinema through her powerful, unapologetic, and content-driven performances. Making her feature film debut in the critically acclaimed Bengali drama Bhalo Theko (2003), Balan took Bollywood by storm with her luminous turn in Pradeep Sarkar's period romance Parineeta (2005 opposite Saif Ali Khan), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Defying industry stereotypes regarding female body standards and conventional commercial heroines, Balan spearheaded a historic wave of female-led box office triumphs between 2009 and 2012, beginning with R. Balki's Paa, Abhishek Chaubey's rustic dark comedy Ishqiya, Raj Kumar Gupta's true-life thriller No One Killed Jessica, Milan Luthria's blockbuster biopic The Dirty Picture (2011, winning her the National Film Award for Best Actress as Silk Smitha), and Sujoy Ghosh's iconic Kolkata thriller Kahaani (2012). She continued her streak of critical excellence with Tumhari Sulu (2017), Shakuntala Devi (2020), Sherni (2021), and Jalsa (2022). Balan is revered as one of Indian cinema's greatest pioneers of female agency and artistic courage.
