Dunki

Storyline

Dunki is a heartwarming, emotionally poignant, and socially pertinent comedy-drama helmed by master storyteller Rajkumar Hirani, marking his celebrated first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan. The narrative unfolds across decades, centering on a close-knit quartet of spirited dreamers in the rural heartlands of Laltu, Punjab—Manu, Balli, Buggu, and Sukhi—each yearning for a brighter future and desperately seeking a passage to England to escape poverty, familial debt, and lack of opportunity. Hampered by stringent visa requirements, financial hardship, and an inability to pass complex English language tests, the group finds an unexpected beacon of hope in Hardy (Hardayal Singh Dhillon), an upright former Indian Army soldier who arrives in their village seeking to repay an old life-saving debt. Empathizing with their desperation and falling deeply in love with the fiercely independent Manu, Hardy vows to personally escort them across borders using the treacherous and perilous clandestine route colloquially known as the 'donkey flight' (Dunki). Their harrowing transcontinental odyssey takes them through arid Iranian deserts, freezing snow-capped mountains, hazardous sea crossings, and ruthless human trafficking syndicates, where tragedy strikes with heart-wrenching severity. Through moments of sublime laughter, gut-wrenching grief, and profound moral trials, the film interrogates arbitrary global borders and the basic human right to seek dignity. Seamlessly blending Hirani’s trademark satirical warmth with Shah Rukh Khan’s incandescent charm and emotional gravity, Dunki stands as a deeply moving tribute to the immigrant soul, patriotic longing, and the sacred promise of homecoming.
