Mard

Cast of Mard (Film), Box Office Gross, Budget & Streaming Guide

"Mard ko dard nahi hota!"

Storyline

Mard is a flamboyant, high-octane historical action-fantasy blockbuster directed by Manmohan Desai that crystallized Amitabh Bachchan's indestructible superhero persona for an entire generation. Set during the oppressive twilight of the British Raj in colonial India, the epic saga opens with the noble and courageous Raja Azad Singh of Dharampur, who fiercely champions the liberation of his oppressed subjects against colonial exploitation. In a cowardly ambush orchestrated by treacherous general Dyer and treacherous native turncoat Harry, Raja Azad is captured and imprisoned in the fortress dungeons, while his infant son is rescued and hidden away by the queen before she is rendered mute by trauma. Before their separation, Azad carves the word 'Mard' (Man) across his newborn son's chest with an iron clasp, proclaiming that his son will grow up to fear no adversity. Reared in a humble blacksmith's settlement, the boy matures into Raju, a fearless, righteous tangawallah accompanied by his intensely loyal horse Badal and intelligent pet dog Moti. Raju lives by the immortal credo 'Mard ko dard nahi hota' (A true man feels no pain), standing as a beacon of resistance against cruel colonial overseers and corrupt aristocrats who exploit peasant laborers. When Raju falls in love with the fiery, proud aristocrat Ruby and discovers the truth of his royal lineage and imprisoned parents, he transforms into a masked revolutionary force of nature. Featuring wild gladiatorial chariot combat, daring dungeon rescues, anti-colonial zeal, and unbridled cinematic machismo, Mard remains one of the most commercially triumphant and beloved escapist action celebrations of Indian cinema.
