Mimi

Storyline

Directed by Laxman Utekar, the 2021 comedy-drama Mimi was a triumphant streaming smash that earned Kriti Sanon the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actress and Pankaj Tripathi the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Set in the colorful town of Mandawa in Rajasthan, the film follows Mimi Rathore (Kriti Sanon), an ambitious small-town local dancer who dreams of making it in Bollywood. Lacking the ₹20 lakh required for a Mumbai photoshoot, Mimi agrees to an unconventional proposal mediated by cheerful taxi driver Bhanu (Pankaj Tripathi): becoming a surrogate mother for an American couple, John and Summer, who cannot conceive. When a prenatal test incorrectly suggests the unborn fetus may have Down syndrome, the panicked American parents abandon the pregnancy and flee back to the United States. Devastated and visibly pregnant, Mimi must convince her conservative parents that the child is Bhanu's, leading to hilarious confusion before she bravely embraces motherhood, giving birth to a healthy baby boy named Raj. When the biological parents return years later to claim the child, Mimi wages a fierce emotional battle for her son. Driven by A. R. Rahman's vibrant musical score (featuring 'Param Sundari'), Mimi is a heartfelt triumph.
