Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire
Prashanth Neel's 2023 dark, hyper-violent action blockbuster Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire marked the explosive, roaring return of pan-Indian megastar Prabhas to absolute box office dominance, grossing over ₹700 crore worldwide. Set in the dystopian, sovereign city-state of Khansaar—a lawless, fortress metropolis founded by brutal nomadic tribes in Gujarat that operates completely outside the jurisdiction of the Indian government—the film centers on the unbreakable, tragic bond of friendship between Deva (Prabhas) and Varadharaja Mannaar (Prithviraj Sukumaran). In 1985, a young Deva commits horrific violence to save Varadha's sister, prompting Varadha to grant Deva's mother sanctuary outside Khansaar while making a blood pact to return if summoned. Decades later, as Khansaar spirals into a vicious coup following the illness of King Raja Mannaar (Jagapathi Babu), Varadha faces extermination from rival tribal warlords and invokes the pact. Deva unleashes ungodly, unstoppable violence to place his friend upon the throne, even as destiny pits them against each other in the impending Part 2: Shouryaanga Parvam. Powered by Ravi Basrur's visceral score and Bhuvan Gowda's black-and-grey palettes, Salaar is a mass epic.
Lootera
Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and inspired by O. Henry's 1907 classic short story The Last Leaf, Lootera (2013) is revered by critics and cinephiles as one of the most poetic, visually sublime, and heartbreaking romantic period dramas ever produced in Hindi cinema. Set in 1953 in the aristocratic rural town of Manikpur, West Bengal, against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act, Pakhi Roy Chowdhury (Sonakshi Sinha in a career-best, melancholic performance), the pampered, sheltered daughter of a wealthy Bengali zamindar, suffers from chronic asthma. Her quiet existence is ignited when charismatic visiting archaeologist Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer Singh in a deeply nuanced, understated performance) arrives to excavate ancient temple ruins on their estate. As an intense romance blossoms and an engagement is finalized, Varun's dark secret as a professional con man and antique thief surfaces on the wedding day, leaving Pakhi betrayed, heartbroken, and ruined. A year later, in the snowy, isolated hills of Dalhousie, a terminally ill Pakhi waits to die as autumn leaves fall from her lone tree, while a fugitive Varun returns seeking redemption. With Amit Trivedi's masterpiece soundtrack and Mahendra Shetty's painterly 35mm cinematography, Lootera is an achingly beautiful, timeless ode to sacrifice and art.
Stree 2
Amar Kaushik's 2024 blockbuster Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank, produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Supernatural Universe, made box office history by grossing over ₹850 crore worldwide to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time in domestic net collections. Returning to the eerie, folklore-rich town of Chanderi, the narrative picks up years after the town was liberated from the vengeful female spirit Stree. However, a terrifying new supernatural entity arrives: 'Sarkata'—a headless, misogynistic demonic demon who abducts modern, independent women to drag society back into patriarchal darkness. Vicky (Rajkummar Rao in a comedic, romantic tour de force), alongside his loyal bickering friends Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana) and Janna (Abhishek Banerjee), and wise occult scholar Rudra Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), must seek the help of their former adversary Stree and the enigmatic, nameless ghost-woman (Shraddha Kapoor). Blending laugh-out-loud situational comedy, jump scares, and sharp progressive satire with unforgettable cameos by Varun Dhawan (as Bhediya) and Akshay Kumar, Stree 2 redefined the horror-comedy genre in Indian cinema. Breaking all previous records held by Bollywood giants, Stree 2 demonstrated the immense commercial potential of India's indigenous horror-comedy folklore. Its infectious blend of genuine terror, razor-sharp dialogue, and stellar comedic chemistry between Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, and Pankaj Tripathi elevated the Maddock Supernatural Universe into a multi-billion-rupee cinematic juggernaut.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) is an immortal cinematic milestone and one of the highest-grossing films in Indian box office history when adjusted for inflation, selling over 50 million theatrical tickets and capturing the hearts of millions across the nation. Set against the harrowing communal bloodbath of the 1947 Partition of India, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol in an iconic, career-defining performance of earth-shattering intensity and tender masculinity), a patriotic Punjabi truck driver, rescues Sakina (Ameesha Patel), an aristocratic Muslim woman separated from her family during sectarian riots in Amritsar. Tara protects Sakina, and their bond blossoms into marriage and fatherhood. Years later, Sakina discovers her father, Ashraf Ali (Amrish Puri in a commanding villainous turn), is alive and serving as the Mayor of Lahore, Pakistan. Traveling to Lahore to visit him, Sakina is trapped by her father, who forces her to renounce her marriage and Indian citizenship. Defying international borders and an entire hostile regime, Tara Singh journeys into Pakistan alongside his young son Jeete, unleashing legendary fury—including the immortal hand-pump uprooting scene—to reclaim his wife. Ghajini
Written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss as a remake of his own 2005 Tamil blockbuster, 2008's psychological revenge action thriller Ghajini created historic box office history, becoming the first film in Bollywood history to cross the ₹100 crore nett mark and establishing Hindi cinema's coveted '100 Crore Club'. Aamir Khan underwent an unprecedented, punishing eight-month physical transformation, crafting an iconic chiseled six-pack physique and cropped buzzcut to portray Sanjay Singhania, a wealthy telecommunications tycoon who suffers from anterograde amnesia—a condition that prevents him from forming new memories lasting longer than fifteen minutes—after being brutally beaten with an iron rod during the murder of his fiancée Kalpana (Asin in a sparkling, endearing Bollywood debut). Unable to retain short-term memory, Sanjay navigates his bloodthirsty quest for vengeance through a complex system of Polaroid photographs, instructional handwritten notes, and explicit vengeful tattoos etched directly into his own skin. Hunted by both Mumbai police and the ruthless crime lord Ghajini Dharmatma (Pradeep Rawat), Sanjay unleashes terrifying, berserker physical violence against those responsible. Boasting A.R. Rahman's hit soundtrack ('Hai Rama', 'Guzarish') and Murugadoss's high-octane action choreography, Ghajini is an exhilarating, emotionally charged blockbuster that transformed modern Indian action cinema.
Devara: Part 1
Koratala Siva's 2024 high-voltage coastal action spectacle Devara: Part 1 marked the triumphant solo return of Man of Masses Jr NTR following his global RRR acclaim, grossing over ₹500 crore worldwide. Set along the rugged, lawless coastal waters of the Red Sea during the 1980s and 1990s, the epic saga chronicles four isolated warrior clans whose ancestors guarded the coast but have degenerated into ruthless maritime pirates smuggling illegal contraband and weapons for international syndicates. Jr NTR delivers an electrifying dual performance as Devara, a fearless, righteous tribal chieftain who discovers the horrifying weaponized cargo they are smuggling and bans all illicit sea operations, clashing violently with his ambitious rival Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan in a menacing, ferocious Telugu debut). When Devara disappears into the churning sea after leaving behind a lethal vow of retribution, his timid, cowardly son Vara (also Jr NTR) must navigate the deadly clan politics, falling in love with Thangam (Janhvi Kapoor in her South Indian debut) while guarding a shocking secret. Packed with jaw-dropping underwater shark fights and Anirudh Ravichander's roaring score, Devara is a mass marvel.
Singham Again
Rohit Shetty's 2024 multi-starrer Diwali mega-blockbuster Singham Again brought the multi-billion-rupee Cop Universe to its grandest, most expansive scale yet, cleverly weaving the ancient mythological narrative motifs of the Ramayana into modern counter-terrorism policing. Ajay Devgn returns with volcanic gravitas as DCP Bajirao Singham, who faces a personal and national catastrophe when his cultural curator wife Avni (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is abducted by Danger Lanka (Arjun Kapoor in a vicious, unhinged turn), an international terrorist operative operating from Sri Lanka. Channeling Lord Rama's legendary expedition to rescue Sita, Singham marshals his elite Cop Universe allies in an explosive, multinational military campaign: Ranveer Singh as the eccentric, thunderous ACP Sangram 'Simmba' Bhalerao, Akshay Kumar as the helicopter-flying ATS chief Veer Sooryavanshi, Deepika Padukone as the fearless 'Lady Singham' SP Shakti Shetty, and Tiger Shroff as ACP Satya. Culminating in an electrifying surprise post-credits cameo by Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey, Singham Again delivered unadulterated big-screen mass fireworks and record holiday box office numbers across India. Rohit Shetty's high-stakes sequel incorporates modern cinematic VFX, breathtaking vehicular mayhem, and mythological allegories to deliver an exhilarating theatrical spectacle uniting India's most beloved on-screen police officers in an epic battle against international organized crime.
Leo
Lokesh Kanagaraj's 2023 action juggernaut Leo, starring Thalapathy Vijay, achieved one of the biggest opening weekends in Indian cinema history, grossing over ₹620 crore worldwide. Inspired by David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, the film centers on Parthi (Vijay), a gentle, mild-mannered animal rescuer and coffee shop owner living a peaceful, snow-covered life in Theog, Himachal Pradesh, with his beloved wife Sathya (Trisha Krishnan) and their two children. When Parthi heroically neutralizes a band of bloodthirsty robbers in his cafe to protect his daughter, his face is plastered across national newspapers. The publicity catches the attention of vicious drug lords Antony Das (Sanjay Dutt) and Harold Das (Arjun Sarja), who believe Parthi is actually Leo Das—Antony's estranged, presumed-dead son and an unstoppable, homicidal cartel enforcer who vanished after burning down their tobacco-narcotics empire. Despite Parthi's desperate, tearful insistence that he is merely a peaceful family man, the Das brothers unleash ruthless violence upon his family, forcing Parthi to unleash his hidden, devastating inner beast. Featuring Anirudh Ravichander's heart-pumping score, Leo cemented Vijay's supreme box office stature.
Enthiran
Directed by visionary filmmaker S. Shankar and produced by Sun Pictures, the 2010 science-fiction superhero epic Enthiran (The Robot) shattered all previous box office records to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, winning two Academy Awards for Special Effects and Production Design. Superstar Rajinikanth delivers a breathtaking, virtuoso dual performance as Dr. K. Vaseegaran, a brilliant roboticist, and Chitti, an advanced, super-powered android created for military defense. When the Indian Army rejects Chitti for lacking human empathy and decision-making capacity, Vaseegaran implants an emotional processor chip. The experiment succeeds too well: Chitti falls deeply in love with Vaseegaran's medical student fiancée, Sana (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in an ethereal, radiant performance). Rejected by Sana and manipulated by rival scientist Dr. Bohra (Danny Denzongpa), who implants a 'red chip' of destruction, Chitti morphs into a ruthless, super-intelligent villain who clones an army of hundreds of killer robots. Culminating in an extraordinary, Hollywood-level CGI finale where thousands of robots assemble into a giant serpent, ball, and drill, powered by A. R. Rahman's score, Enthiran is an Indian sci-fi milestone.
